Essay sample on Consumer Protection

Consumer Protection

Consumer protection is a set of laws that are put in place to ensure that the rights of consumers are protected at every time that they visit the market to purchase various kinds of products. Apart from just promoting the rights of consumers, consumer protection also aims at enhancing fair trade, competition and also accurate information in the market. These laws are set so that businesses are prevented from engaging in fraudulent activities or any other unfair practices in order to acquire a competitive advantage over others.

It is not mandatory that every customer should know all the specific laws and regulations or acts that are embodied in consumer protection. However, it is advisable that one should be acquainted with the basics of consumer protection so that you are able to know what to do in the event that you are treated unfairly in the marketplace. It is important to note that all consumers have basic legal rights if the product that they are offered in the market is given misleading information or is of an unsatisfactory quality. Besides, consumers also have basic legal rights if the product that is sold in the market is not suitable for the purpose that it is intended.

Consumer protection laws act as a way through which the government regulates business operations for the protection of the rights of consumers. The protection can also be extended to groups of people who are deemed as vulnerable in society. For instance, a government may have a provision that all businesses that deal in the manufacturing of certain products like consumables should disclose information about the products that they manufacture. Consumer protection is linked to the idea of consumer rights, and also the formation of organizations for championing that course.

Depending on the state that you reside in, there are various government laws introduced to regulate the market and give consumers, the rights to question the quality of products that they buy in case they suspect any foul play. Consumer protection laws also outline the punishment that can be given to businesses that are found in contempt. In fact, government institutions in charge of consumer protection have criminalized the acts of giving false information about products, charging wrong prices and sale of products that are not safe.

Apart from just the government, consumer protection can also be promoted through other organizations like self-regulating business organizations, ombudsmen among others. Consumer activism through individuals and non-governmental organizations can also be applied in ensuring that consumers are not taken advantage of by unscrupulous businesses.

In the United States, consumer protection is promoted through several federal and state laws. Some of these laws include Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Truth in Lending Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, and Fair Credit Billing Act among others. California is notably the state with the strongest consumer protection laws as a result of persistent from advocacy groups such as Utility Consumers’ Action Network, Privacy Rights Clearing House and Consumer Federation of California.
