Effects of Cold War on Soviet Union

The Soviet Union was one of the main participants in the Cold War. It was engaged in the war with the USA and their allies. When studying or trying to review the Cold War, it is very important to note that at the end of it all, the USA remained as the sole superpower while the Soviet Union collapsed. With this, you can imagine the impacts that the Cold War had on the Soviet Union. In fact, it suffered the greatest impacts from the Cold War considering that it could no longer hold its ground at the end of the war.

One of the greatest effects of the Cold War on the Soviet Union is that it led to its disintegration. In December 1991, the world watched in amazement as the once powerful Soviet Union was divided into fifteen different states. The collapsed was hailed by the USA as victory against Communism dictatorship. The collapse of the Soviet Union brought in a new phase to the political situation in the world. As a result of the fall of the Soviet Union, there was a total reformulation of economic, political and military unions across the world.

The Cold War led to the emergence of various nationalist movements within the Soviet Union. When the government of the last ruler of the Soviet Union; Mikhail Gorbachev refused to allow the Nagorno-Karabagh population from seceding, a violent territorial dispute that degenerated into an all-out war erupted. With this, several nationalist movements began to take center stage in Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Byelorussia and several Central Asian republics. The actions of these movements significantly weakened the power of the central government of the Soviet Union.

In order to save the Soviet Union, a group of Communist forces organized a coup d’ etat and took the first step by kidnapping the leader of the Communist Soviet; Gorbachev in August 1991. After capturing the leader, they announced on state television that the leader of the Soviet Union was in a critical health condition that would no longer allow him to hold on to the seat of power. This led to massive uproar and protests staged across major cities of the Soviet Union including Moscow, Leningrad among others. However, the organizers of the coup were forced to surrender after failure to get backing from the military.

As a result of the demonstrations that had swept across the country, it was clear that the population was geared towards democracy. Gorbachev had no choice but to concede power and resign. With this, the Soviet Union ceased to exist and a new entity called the Commonwealth of Independent Republics was formed. Even though the fifteen newly formed independent states had acquired the democracy that they so much longed for, they were left with the overwhelming tasks of developing their ravaged economies, reorganization of their disrupted political systems and settling bitter territorial disputes.
