With analysts estimating more than 100 million sales copies, thriller is no doubt the highest selling album of the time. It was the sixth album of the (late) recording artist Michael Jackson, who was considered the best artist of the time by many people. The album was an Epic Records production and it was released in November 1982.
The artist was an African American songwriter, performer and an artist. Thriller had nine tracks from different sub genres including rhythm, blues, rock and pop. The most popular of the album was however, Wanna be starting something, the girl is mine, Billie Jean, Beat it and Human nature.
The first track ‘Wanna be starting something is funkier compared to pop. ‘The girl is mine’ was a duet by Paul McCartney and the song contains a combination of pop instrumentation and soft rock. ‘Beat it’ on the other hand was probably the most oriented piece in the entire album. The song was primarily composed to attract individuals who favored hard rock above other music genres.
‘Billie Jean’ contains a blend of speedy funk. ‘Human nature’ is a composition of R & B and has catchy lyrics with an introspective melody (Classic Rock Review 1). The song thriller was also the highlight of the album. The song also employs a combination of instrumentations such as drums, bass, brass, synthesized strings, trumpets and vocals. Once Jackson starts to sing, instruments become less concentrated thus, ensuring that all other features are superseded by vocal lines.
The fact that seven of the songs in the album emerged top in top ten music charts is a testimony of the album’s success. Even so, the album was the first music videos to promote the songs, hence a remarkable feature of Thriller. This was also an innovative move that has remained to date.
