Sample Essay on Chechen Wars

Chechen Wars are also called the War in Chechnya. They refer to conflict that occurred between the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and the Russian Federation. There was the first Chechen war and the second Chechen war. The wars were fought between December 1994 and August 1996. On concluding the first campaign in 1994 to 1995 which ended in the battle of Grozny which was devastating, federal forces of Russia tried to take control of mountainous region of Chechnya.

However, the guerrilla warfare of Chechen set them back with help of raids on flatlands despite the overwhelming manpower, air support and weaponry of the Russian forces. This resulted in a widespread demoralization of the Russian forces. It also caused a virtually universal opposition of Russian public and conflict that led to declaration of a ceasefire by the government led by Boris Yeltsin. A peace treaty was signed later with Chechens a year after ceasefire in 1996.

Although the official reports indicate that deaths of the Russian military from the first Chechen war was 5,500, there are estimates that put this number between 3,500 and 7,500. Others say that the figure could be even up to 14,000. No accurate figure of the Chechen militants that were killed although the estimated figure is about 3,000. Others estimate that the figure could be as high as 15,000 deaths. Civilians killed are estimated range from 30,000 to 100,000 with more than 200,000 injured.

The second Chechen war started on 26th August 1999 when the Russian Federation launched their attack on Chechnya. This was in response to Dagestan invasion by Islamic International Brigade. Russian troops attacked Chechnya on 1st October. Campaign by the Russian troops ended a de facto independence that the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria had while restoring the control of this territory to Russian federal. Despite being considered as the internal conflict of Russian federation, the second Chechen war attracted many foreign fighters.

Pro-Russian paramilitary and Russian military forces faced the Chechen separatists in an open combat which ended in the seizure of the capital of Chechen, Grozny. This was after a siege during winter that lasted since 1999 to the February of 2000. In May 2000, Russia established its direct rule over Chechnya.

Despite the full-scale offensive, resistance of the Chechen militant continued across the Northern Caucasus area which inflicted heavy casualties on the Russians while challenging the political control of Russia over Chechnya. Some Russian civilians were also attacked by the Chechen separatists. The attacks and violations of human rights by separatists and Russian forces attracted international condemnation.
