Sample Essay on Elizabeth I of England

Elizabeth I of England

Elizabeth I of England was the queen of England and the Ireland from 17th November 1558 till her death in 24th March 1603. Some people call her the Virgin Queen while some refer to her as the Good Queen Bess. She was the last and the fifth monarchy of Tudor dynasty.

Elizabeth I of England was born on 7th September 1533 at Greenwich. She was the daughter of the second wife of Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn. In her early life, Elizabeth had many uncertainties. Her chances of being the successor of the throne of England were very slight especially in 1537 when Edward who was her half-brother was born.

She was the third in the line of the Roman Catholic with a half-sister called Princess Mary. According to the Roman Catholic, Elizabeth was considered illegitimate. She was almost being executed following a failed rebellion that took place in 1554 against Mary.

However, Elizabeth I of England succeeded the throne after the death of her half-sister that happened in the November of 1558. Elizabeth was well-educated and she could speak six languages fluently. She also inherited determination, shrewdness and intelligence from her parents. She was the queen of England for 45 years which are considered to have been the most glorious reign in the history of England.

During her reign, the Church of England was established securely. 13 articles were laid down and they comprised the doctrines of this church. This church established in 1563 was considered as the compromise between Protestantism and Roman Catholicism. Elizabeth declines to make windows in the souls of men. She observed that there is only one and that is Jesus Christ while the rest is dispute over what she called trifles and she asked people to seek outward uniformity.

Many people in England accepted her compromise and the church formed the basis of faith for most of them and it was also during her reign that a settlement for the Church of England was probably saved. This also saved England from the famous religious wars such as the ones suffered by France in the 16th Century.

Despite being capricious and autocratic, Elizabeth I of England had astute judgment in politics and she was able to choose ministers properly. Among the ministers who served during her reign include Hatton, Burghley and Walsingham. The overall administration of Elizabeth I of England consisted of about 600 officials who administered great offices and dealing with Crown lands. Several discoveries including those of Walter Raleigh, Francis Drake and Humphrey Gilbert were made during the reign of Elizabeth I of England.
