Introduction

There are different management practices but there are five practices that are considered good and effective. The five practices include organizing, leading, planning, staffing and control (Tripathi, 2006.p.10). A workplace that is successful has staff that works towards making the organization move forward and to excel. The management of such organizations is mandated to ensure employees are organized and well informed of the organization’s plans.

The management should also lead in the proper way and control professionally to ensure the company achieves its objectives. Working in the military for example is tough and by applying the 5 management functions is imperative as it allows for coordination between different military departments. It also helps to make communication easier.

Additionally, executives and owners of any organization should be well informed of the five management functions so that they can also implement them at workplace. Planning

Planning is one of the most important management functions and it entails choosing strategies from different alternatives (Raj, 2007). Planning is also the capability of a company to decide on what should be done prior to the actual event by knowing what to do, how to do it and when to do it. It is also a function that clearly stipulates who should accomplish a certain plan, nominate, define resources and various actions expected to produce specific results.

Planning is also imperative in any organization as it plays a great role in mapping out its goals. It also motivates employees to pursue company and personal goals. In the military, the function outlines the right steps that the army should take during the recruitment process, when procuring weapons whenever they want to engage in battle with other countries.   

The management function is also important because it helps an organization to plan. It is essential to note that delays are more likely to occur because of lack of planning based on the fact orders are not followed.  A good example of how planning is depicted in the military is when American soldiers want to engage in war with another country or against terrorist groups such as Al-Qaeda where top NSIS officials with their commander deliberate on how the attack will be executed.

They decide on the most appropriate approach to use, the type of war planes to be used, the number of foot soldiers to participate and other logical factors such as counselling sessions and budget. The main aim of planning is to ensure a good result even before the war starts and to ensure soldiers are well equipped.  

Organizing

Organizing is also an important management function that involves bringing together financial, physical and human resources with an aim of developing a productive relationship with different departments to ensure the desired result is achieved.  There are three important processes that occur at the organization stage including labor units, positioning and developing tasks.

Army leaders in such a case determine the exact action to be taken against the enemy including bombing, arrests and destabilization. Army officers as part of the organization are grouped into different teams so that each team can take cover on another and they are also given the responsibility of each individual in the team.

The army also delegates duties and in the event of fatalities, there is a specific appointed personnel that takes over the troops controlling them so that they can meet their objectives. The organization is also divided into troops and divisions within the military department.

The navy, army or the air force may also be involved in the attack. It is therefore at the organization stage where different activities carried are clearly identified, delegation of authority takes place and activities are carried out. It also helps in determining human capital among other useful resources in the undertaking.

Staffing

Staffing is a management function that involves managing organization’s structure through a sustained labor force to meet company objective (Mcgraw-Hill, 2009 p. 79-83). At this stage, company management determines its requirements based on available labor force so that they can comfortably recruit skills and characteristics that suit a particular job.

After recruitment, selected persons are trained so that they are equipped with positions and roles assigned to them. Manpower planning is also offered at the staffing section by ensuring that the personnel are carefully selected to fill vacant positions. Training is also offered to equip selected personnel with knowledge regarding the vacancies available. Additionally, remuneration is decided at staffing stage to motivate employee and entire workforce. Promotions are awarded to those who perform exemplary well while some are transferred. This is done through performance appraisal strategy.

Leading/directing/motivating

Directing, leading or motivating involves guiding and influencing others to achieve organizational and personal goals. It is a management function that involves supervision, leadership, communication and motivation (Rao, 2005 p. 36). Company management oversees the work of all subordinate staff in supervision and directs all workers.

In leading, motivation is carried out where employees are encouraged to work towards the success of the organization. Employees are also inspired in leading and it involves negative and positive reward motivation where positive motivation includes non-monetary and monetary incentives as well as promotions. Negative motivations on the other hand include pay cuts and demotions.

Leadership in staffing involves guiding of subordinate staff by leaders and top management. The management also influences the work of subordinate staff. While communication is imperative and involves passing of important company information, opinions and experiences from one person to the other to enhance understanding in the achievement of company objectives (Miller, 2002).

In the military, leadership is also exercised where top leaders give directions and commands to junior employees and subordinate staff on what should be done.

Control

Control is additionally a management function that involves correction and measurement of performance activities of the subordinate staff to ensure company plans and objectives desired are achieved or accomplished (Cooray, 2011 p. 50). At this stage, the outcomes of the other management functions including leading, staffing, organizing and planning are measured and evaluated to determine whether the organization has achieved its objectives or not (Weihrich, 2008 p. 84).

Controlling also helps an organization to determine whether the other management functions have been successful. The function is additionally an ongoing process that helps to pilots a company towards its goals. Under control management function, performance standards are also established and any ongoing project is closely evaluated. Performances are corrected in the event where the management feels its deviating from company standards and norms.

Correcting is done by comparing set standards with actual performance to determine any errors that might have occurred as well as corrective measures that needs to be undertaken.

Control systems are also designed to monitor and decide standards in the system. If army troops for example faced budget issues and logistical problems after going to war, control stage can demand an increase in labor force or budget to the troops to boost their chances of winning the war.

Conclusion

The success of an organization largely depends on how the functions of management are incorporated in the organization. Top organization management need to adhere to the functions by working closely with subordinate staff to ensure that company objectives are met. This being the circumstance, the organization should be in a position to understand how and when a specific management function ought to be applied.

Organization and planning helps company management to plan the onset and rolling of the organization while leading and staffing covers running of the organization. The control of the organization in general determines the success of the organization in achievement of its goals. In the army, the management functions are very crucial as they help in designing programs used by the military in combating enemies and in maintaining peace.
